I went to see "I am Legend" over the Christmas break. I thought it was a pretty good movie. It was not one that I will put in my "Dude Collection", but it was still interesting and good.( If you are planning to see it don't read any farther because I will give the ending away.) The interesting part was that the main character Will Smith gives his life to save the world from a deadly virus that has attacked man making them less than human. I haven't researched the author of this book, but what strikes me about the story is it's similarity to the Gospel. The world is perishing. Someone must die to save it. This is the essence of the gospel. The world rejects it, but on the other hand it is right under their nose. The world longs for salvation, and you can see and hear it in the movies produced in Hollywood.
What other movies can you think of that have the essence of the gospel in it's plot?

I havent seen "I am Legend" (with 4 kids I rarely see any movies), but I have read the book some 15-16 years ago after seeing its first incarnations in film, "The last man on Earth" (1960s). I didnt come away with the same impressions from the book...but I am sure Hollywood kept what they wanted and changed it as they saw fit. It sounds like they changed it for the better leaving out vampires and the "still living".
NONE THE LESS...What a great concept. The Gospel as seen in Movies. It is fun for me to see the Gospel in everyday life, TV, Movies and use those examples to teach and share. I work in Food Safety so I often use Mosaic Law to explain clean and unclean when dealing with cross contamination.
This topic might take me all day to post...so I guess I should just get started and keep it to 2 items.
The first Movie I remember seeing the Gospel in was " Superman." If you have hidden under a rock for your entire life let me share with you Superman’s story. (Comic book memories interfere and overlap here too)
From above, a father sends his only son to Earth. When he comes down to Earth, he is raised by two parents who originally had the names Mary and Joseph. (sound familar)
When Superman comes of age, he travels to the artic wilderness to commune with his father’s spirit, which mirrors Christ’s journey into the desert.
At age 30, Superman embarks on his public mission. And then Superman in his mission or ministry, fights for truth and justice.
Later in the Comic books he is killed and comes back to life (I always saw that as blasphemy)...but the essence of Superman's story refelcts the essence of the Gospel. (I guess those two Jewish authors must have found some inspirarion in the New testament) But, let me move on to my second. Quite frankly, my favorite.
It isnt a movie but a TV show. It is found in the least likely of places, MTV. The show is called "Pimp my Ride".
The concept of the show is simple. people with old broken down cars petition MTV to make thier cars new and refreshed.
The Biblical truth I walk away with is we all were broken down until we asked Jesus into our lives to make them new and refreshed.
Excellent topic Chris...kept me up a little last night. I may post some more later but I wait first for the ideas from the other 2 million readers. :-)
