Beauty Pageant for Nuns Cancelled

I don't know if you caught this news yesterday, but an Italian Catholic priest was planning an online beauty pageant for Nuns. He has since suspended the beauty pageant because of pressure from his overseers. This is fascinating to me. (I personally was looking forward to the priests to have a weightlifting contest after the pageant.)

Here's my one of my observations...the church is deep trouble when we have to uphold the beauty of our women to get the attention of the world. It would be far better to uphold the beauty of Christ, for His glory is never fading.

What do you think about this beauty pageant for Nuns?

My "primary take" on the beauty pageant is that this congregation ran into the same problem facing many congregations across the nation; how do you maintain a budget, or funding, to continue the work of Christ? By-passing the whole Catholic - Protestant thing, and being careful NOT to throw any stones, MANY congregations face the same dilemma.

I assume the priest almost compromised one of the tenants of the Catholic faith in order to acquire much needed funds. I have heard this referred to as The Trap of Convenience. We all must be careful not to fall into the trap of convenience and compromise tenants of our faith. I also think that there is a bigger issue of “First Fruits” coming into play. If his congregation, as well as other congregations across the nation, offered their first fruits, beauty pageants, calendars, building funds or any one of thousands of special fund raisers would not be necessary.

But then in today’s age, how do you define first fruits? Is it the first check written after the automatic deposit? Does the check include the value of the fringe benefits (insurance, car, etc) associated with your job? Is the check based on net or gross pay? Does first fruit include the first awake hours of your week for volunteer service (If that’s the case, I’m glad we go to church on Sunday morning)? If you’re doing volunteer work, is it a percent of time to grudgingly throw something together at the last minute, instead of something that has been done with care and purposeful intent?

Somehow, I feel like I just headed down a rabbit hole. I’m afraid I don’t have any answers, but then, you didn’t ask for answers, you asked for thoughts.

See you later.
